Art application deadline

Reminder: ART DEADLINE – March 1st!
All students applying to any of the Art concentrations will need to –
Complete a Change of Major form, available in the Advisement Center in 11 Bowman Hall.
Submit a statement of goals pertaining to the concentration you are applying to.
Submit a digital portfolio on CD, using jpeg format, of up to 10 pieces of art work. The art work should be from Art & Design courses currently or previously taken, preferably at the college level, but can include high school work. Make sure that your shots are representative of your work.

The deadline for applications, statement of goals and the digital portfolio is March 1st, 2009. Please submit all materials to the Advisement Center by that date.

FAQ’s about finals week!

Q. When is Evaluation(Finals) Week?
A. Evaluation week runs from Monday Dec. 15 through Dec. 19, 2008 . You can leave campus once your last final is complete. Spring classes begin Thursday, January 22, 2009! Enjoy your break

Q. When & Where are my finals?
A: Look at your course syllabus

§ Verify information w/ professor (professors often adjust/tweak finals schedules)

Q. Is my daily schedule going to change?
A. YES!!!! Evaluation Week runs on a completely different schedule than a normal school week!
§ EVERYTHING can change.(your final may have a different day of the week, time of day, building, room, and class size)
§ Start Times (Finals run from 8:00am – 8:00pm M-F)
§ Length of Finals (Final exams allow for 110 min. for completion please plan accordingly)

You need to see your advisor in your major for suggestions for courses.

What to do if Your class is Closed

Keep checking the class listing under “Search for Classes”. There is a lot of adding and dropping going on – maybe you can still catch a slot.
Wait until the first day of class. Go to class with an add/drop slip filled out and ask the professor to sign.
Register for another section of the course that is open and then add/drop the first day of class. (The course still has to fit into your schedule or the computer won’t let you do it.)
Ask the professor to sign an add slip – You have to have a good reason why you need the class to do this.

Balancing Home, jobs, School

Balancing Responsibilities
Do you feel overwhelmed by your obligations? Students often feel overwhelmed by their home, school and work responsibilities. The following are some tips to help keep your life balanced while you handle all your commitments and obligations.

At Home:

Find age appropriate tasks and chores for your children. Post each family member's jobs to avoid confusion. All family members need to share in the household chores.
Post a large calendar where family members can write down their commitments and activities. This will help avoid conflicts and keep everyone aware of upcoming events.
Make a weekly plan for shopping, cleaning, and laundry.
When possible plan and prepare meals ahead of time.
Leave thoughtful notes and messages for your spouse, children, or roommates when they are helpful or understanding. Let them know they are appreciated.
Delegate tasks to others when appropriate.

At School:

Brainstorm with friends, your academic advisor or a counselor about ways to solve difficult or persistent problems.
Look to other students as role models. Ask them for suggestions on ways to make your life easier.
Join a club or on-campus activity. This will help you feel more connected to the UW-Stout community.
Use small amounts of time productively.
Study and do homework on-campus if you are often distracted at home.

At Work:

Find a job with flexible hours.
Keep your work and school schedule balanced.
To avoid scheduling conflicts, provide your employer with your hours of availability at the beginning of each semester.
Schedule a day off in advance, rather than calling in, if you anticipate that you'll need extra time to study or to work on a project.
Remember, no matter what you're doing...
Have realistic expectations for yourself. No one can do it all.
Find ways to keep your stress level under control.
Make sure you plan time for fun and relaxation!
Maintain your sense of humor; you'll need it!

Art major information

Below are the details about the application process if you –
1) Are applying to get into the Art major for any concentration (currently not in the Art major)
2) Are in the art major but want to change your concentration (Graphic, Interior, Industrial, Multimedia, Studio)
3) Are in the art major and have a concentration, but want to add a second concentration

DEADLINE FOR SUBMITTING THE APPLICATION IS WEDNESDAY, OCTOBER 1

Please include all of the following items for review:
- Change of Major form (available in the Advisement Center office, 11 Bowman Hall)
- Unofficial transcript (print from student menu in Access Stout after logging in)
- Statement of Goals (why you want that Art concentration)
- A digital portfolio of up to 10 images in JPEG format. College-level work is preferred, but items from high school may be used as well.
- For upperclassmen: A GPA of 2.5 in all Art, Design, and Art History classes

Registration Fall/Summer 08

QUESTION:
i am taking an online course i do not know who the instructor is, thought that i had it on my schedule print out but it is not. reason why this is a problem is that according to my schedule, class started today and i have not yet heard from the instructor and have no idea how to find out about assignments or anything else pertaining to this class. any ideas?

ANSWER:
The instructor should e-mail you instructions. If not, log into Learn@UWStout from the home page. Click on the current semester and see if there is a link for your class. If so, that is where you will access the course content.

QUESTION:
I have tried sending a message a couple of times to ask5000 and it gets returned undeliverable. Do you know who I need to send the request to to get my username & password for registering?

I have two questions maybe you can help me out with. First, if an instructor doesn't say otherwise, are finals taken in the room where classes are usually held? Second, do I keep my laptop over the summer or do I hand it in? I appreciate your time and helpfulness.

Yikes - It's finals week- here's help

Ten Point Plan on How to Live Through Finals

1. Know when and where the exam is given. You would be surprised how many students miss their final because of some kind of mix-up on scheduling.

2. Plan your study time. If you only have so much time to learn all of American History, Calculus and Biology, use the time to your best advantage. Make a study chart giving so much time to each subject.

3. Break up your subjects. You can't concentrate on one subject for hours on end, so drop it and spend some time on another subject, then return to the original subject.

4. Reward yourself. For every hour of real studying (not including rereading the same sentence 15 times) give yourself a 10-minute break.

5. Be good to yourself. Eat well, dress well, sleep as much as possible - on your study breaks read a good book, listen to music, whatever you enjoy doing.

6. Don't depend on Study Groups. Unless you and the others have already studied the material.

7. Study what's important. Use the syllabus, earlier tests and your impressions to decide what the instructor wants you to know from the course. Chances are that will be on the test.

8. Ask yourself questions. Just reading and rereading the stuff will drive you nuts. Make up questions as you go then put the book down and answer them.

9. Study Backwards. You're most liable to forget what was taught at the beginning of the quarter, so start with the most recent material and move back so you study the early stuff just before the test.

10. Relax for the half-hour before the test. Talk to a friend, eat a sundae, run around the drill field screaming...whatever relaxes you.

You Can't Register???

I'm getting a lot of questions on registration:

1. I have a hold on my record and am not able to register. What should I do?

Answer: Have you made an appointment with your advisor? If you are undecided about your major, call 232-1465 to set up an appointment with me. If you have a major - you need to contact your advisor. They will advise you on classes and remove the hold so you can register online.

2. Why won't the computer let me register for MATH or ENGLISH?

ANSWER: In order to register for Math or English, you must have the prerequisite OR ACT or placement scores. Check with your advisor for info on these scores.

3. I took the prerequisites in MATH and ENGLISH at a previous school, but the computer is still not allowing me to register saying "you do not have the proper prerequisites" to register for this class.

ANSWER: If your transcript from your previous school does not have your final grades for these courses, they are not officially transferred and the computer will not pick them up as prerequisites. You must get a final transcript from your school with the grades in these courses, or get a signature on a drop/add card. You can get a drop/add card at the registrar's office in Bowman 109 or the Advisement Center. In some cases, I can assist you.

Here are some recent questions from transfer students:

When do I have to move out of the dorm?

Answer: May 14 (last day of evaluation week)- this date applies if you are not in the dorms for the summer.

I would like to change my major to Voc. Rehab. I'm not sure how to do this and if it's too late. Someone told me that I can't do it this year and I have to wait till next year?

Answer: You can change your major at any time - unless you are trying to get into an Art program. Stop by the Advisement Center (11 Bowman Hall) and pick up a change of major form.

I am transfering to UW - Stout for the fall semester. I have a few questions for you, when do I need to register for classes? I was also wondering if I can schedule an appointment to meet with someone to help me determine which classes I should take to stay on track for my degree in construction.

Answer: Have you been admitted yet? Once you have been admitted as a transfer to UW-Stout, you will need to attend a half day transfer registration program. During this program, you will meet with an advisor and they will review the courses you need to take. You will be able to register for your courses online at that time.

Then, in the Fall, we have an orientation program that you will attend.

Call 232-1465 (you should also receive a letter) once you are admitted and ask to sign up for a registration day.

Do I have to attend Advisement Day?

Answer: If you have a declared major, YES! Review the Advisement Day listings for instructions.

If you are an UNDECIDED or UNDECLARED transfer student, call 232-1465 and set up an appointment to see me (Cheryl Jones) Make sure the appointment is prior to your registration date.

You received an e-mail from the registration office early this week that gives you your registration date.

How do I change my major?

Spring is coming!!!! REALLLY.

This question has come up a lot lately. How do I change my major? If you are undecided, you will still need to fill out a change of major form to declare a program.

To change your major you need to:

Pick up a change of major form at the front desk of the Advisement Center Office - 11 Bowman Hall

Print out an unofficial copy of your transcript from Access Stout to attache to the form

Many programs have additional requirements - i.e., statement of goals or 2.0 or 2.5 GPA.

Return the above materials to the front desk. Your application will be submitted to the department and you will get an e-mail within 10 days on the results.

Also, students are asking about registration for summer.

Check out summer courses on open course listings on Access Stout.

You should have received an e-mail advising you when you can register according to your credits.

Registration begins on February 25th, so your date will be based on the number of credits you have (the more credits, the sooner you register)

Click on your major, then click on "program plans". If your program offers a "four semester sequence", click on that and review the suggested sequence of courses.

Career decisions

I've been reading a book by Penelope Trunk called "The Brazen Careerist". She states that the new generation will probably have 10 jobs by the time they are 28. Do you agree with this? What kind of implications does this have for making career choices?

This generation does not take a job with the intent of staying for 30 years. They see each job as a rung on a ladder to bigger and better things. If you look at career exploration this way, it is not unreasonble, then to be unsure about your job/career choices when you are young. It is normal. She says most students don't settle their choices about their future until they are around 25. If you are younger than 25, it is normal not to know!!!!
